Nicole Kessner

My name is Nicole Kessner. I am married, and have a 5 year old son Kyle, and twin 3 year old girls Abigail and Isabella. In July of 2012, I was diagnosed with Papillary Carcinoma of the Thyroid. I had a total thyroidectomy in October of 2012, and underwent Radioactive Iodine Treatment in April of 2013. I was cleared of having Cancer, and life was great.

In June of 2014, I was awakened in the middle of the night with pain that I chalked up to gallbladder. It became severe so, I ended up in the emergency room. An ultrasound and MRI found a 6 cm mass adjacent to my liver. I had a core biopsy performed, and on my 7th wedding anniversary I was told I had a rare Tumor Ewings Sarcoma. Ewings Sarcoma is a Pediatric Cancer usually found in the bones and soft tissue. Ewings Sarcoma makes up 1% of Sarcoma and Adults Ewings Sarcoma PNET makes me the .20%. I was told to immediately contact a Sarcoma Specialist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
I underwent PET scans and MRIs to stage my tumor. I had no metatastic disease and was staged a 2. I started chemotherapy in August 2014, and after 4 cycles and a blood transfusion I had surgery in November 2014 to remove the tumor off my diaphragm. The surgery left me with an 8 inch vertical incision in the abdomen. My right top rib was removed along with intercostal tissue.

My husband works two jobs as an EMT for The Township of Monroe and The Township of Princeton. He has had to take many days off and a whole 6 weeks after surgery to help care for the children. I have had 4 chemo cycles post surgery, and still have 5 cycles to complete. I do a 6 hour treatment with one cycle and 21 days later log in 38 hours of a full week of chemo.

It’s been very difficult on my family. We have been trying our best to keep the children’s lives as normal as we possibly can. We are staying as positive as we can, and praying for clean scans in the near future. Treatment is said to end in June (almost a full year from diagnosis) if scans are clear!!
